When Facebook Stands Lazy and Mozilla Takes the Lead: Respect!
A while ago, Mozilla released its Facebook Container Extension in an attempt to protect user’s privacy on the web. Months later, the extension became quite mature and is ready to be adopted on a mass scale.

In this article, I will be explaining how Facebook tracks our activity, how our privacy can be protected and how we can use this extension to regain our privacy.

How Does Facebook Track Our Activity?

Almost all websites on the internet use Facebook widgets that allow visitors to share articles over Facebook as well as post comments and other useful features. While these features are great, Facebook uses them to track which web pages people browse and what type of content people are mainly interested in.

Whenever we open a page that has Facebook widgets within its content, our browser sends a request to Facebook to fetch the widget. By doing so, Facebook learns that we visited that page and saves that information for later use. Many users believe that such information is not harmful. Yet, the latest happenings and incidents that took place at Facebook and that led to the leakage of data related to millions of users is, by itself, a very good reason for online users to start taking their privacy seriously.

How Can We Protect Our Privacy?

It is very tricky and very hard for average users to protect their privacy. The reason is simple: the same data collected by Facebook to provide us services within the Facebook platform is the same data that can harm our privacy.

This issue has been debated openly and aggressively throughout the past years between global giants such as Google, Facebook, etc. These debates always went back to increasing visitor awareness on the data being shared and how to protect one’s privacy. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) played a very important role in spreading awareness. Yet, this was not enough since the majority of users don’t take privacy seriously until it’s too late.

Meet the Facebook Container Extension by Mozilla

Mozilla is the organization behind the famous browser: Firefox. For many years, they played a very important role in global awareness of privacy.

As Mozilla puts it, they are “a not-for-profit organization. They put people over profit to give everyone more power online. They created this extension because they believe that you should have easy-to-use tools that help you manage your privacy and security.”

Because Facebook can track almost all your web activity and tie it to your Facebook identity, Mozilla developed this extension which isolates your online identity into a separate environment, making it harder for Facebook to track you on the web outside of Facebook.

Once the extension is installed, the browser will always open Facebook in a blue tab each time you use it. This blue tab is a separate environment that is not shared with any other website that you visit. This allows you to use and enjoy Facebook normally without allowing Facebook to track you on other websites.

Facebook will still be able to send you advertising and recommendations on their site, but it will be much harder for Facebook to use your activity collected off Facebook to send you ads and other targeted messages.

Install the Extension, Browse and Maintain Your Privacy

Installing the extension is very easy. Just visit the Extension Page, click the Install button and start browsing the web with more privacy.

Please feel free to share your experience in the comments section and let me know if you face any issues or if you have any questions.
